Today’s Challenging Environment

Peak mental performance is a vital necessity in this competitive time of rapid change and multiple challenges.

Whether you are a businessperson, professional, student, parent or homemaker, you are probably facing rapid changes in your environment. Besides having to make many complex decisions, you also face the pressures of multiple expectations from others, globalisation, financial worries, as well as the pressures of striving to maintain good health and a balanced life.

With the many changes that require our constant need to relearn and adapt, we sometimes face inadequate internal resources to rise to the challenge. Our sense of focus, attention, self worth and mental performance may then be compromised. Statistics have shown that a constant rise in mental-related problems such as depression, anxiety disorders and suicide may be triggered by stressful circumstances.

For the majority of us, STRESS is a prime disabler of peak mental performance.

Although we all need some pressure as a personal challenge and for our self-development, it is a fact that stress still affects everyone.

The difference is to what extent we are each affected by stress.

Generally, there are two approaches to deal with stress – you either control the external factors that cause stress (stressors), or manage your response to stress.

At the Stress Management & Research Centre (SMRC), we believe that in order to create and sustain peak mental performance and optimum health, it is more practical to learn to manage one’s reaction to stress rather than to manage the stressors. More often than not, it is quite impossible to manage the stressors around us.

“It is not stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it” -
Dr. Hans Selye (founder of the concept of stress)
